Healthy Goal Setting Can Be Hard

Have you ever started the New Year with a healthy goal and then fallen flat of your face? Well guess what, so have millions…billions of others all around the world. In fact, we all want to have the best expectations of ourselves, but too often, stress and the work load of life get in our way.

Sometimes we think stress and such are preventing us from getting where we want to go. In fact, the blatant truth is, we are what gets in the way.

You might wonder what in the crap we mean saying that we are our own worst problem. The fact is, that can be a hard pill to swallow sometimes. But, the fact remains, that’s the truth.

In order to achieve, be the best we can be and accomplish our goals (whatever they may be), we have to take care of the front lines first. That means US!

Your ability to care for yourself, plan your path and stay the course is what determines whether you will achieve that New Year healthy goal.

So, what’s the best way to make sure you are caring for yourself correctly? That’s the first step. That is to say, without good self-care, the path and what you do with it don’t really matter.

Holiday Stress? Just Say No.

One key to avoiding stress is knowing that it’s okay just to say, “No, I’m not participating.”

It is long been known that on the scale of psychological stresses, the holidays rank near number one.

Why is that?

As you probably guessed, there are many reasons—who can’t name a few? Finances, our and our spouses’ expectations, and—often the biggest—family.

It could be this has been a physically or financially difficult year for you. If so, the holidays might bring dread rather than joy.

One of the most important things to understand is that it’s okay just to say, “No, I’m not participating.” Seriously, I read this many years ago in one of my favorite life simplification books.

Yes, this could be the right solution for you. Sometimes one of the healthiest things we can do is just choose not to participate in chosen—or all—holiday activities.

Psychologists will be the first to tell us that, as adults, the most stressful things the holidays bring are our own expectations that they will miraculously do something for us that they can’t.

So, some people will choose travel, go away for the day, or simply be by themselves. What keeps you happy and healthy is exactly what you should do!

Others seemingly will suffer through anything, and complain about it all the while. This is how you stress yourself out!

Yet others embrace the season with joy.

Whatever it is for you, start by making a healthy choice.

Like everything, keep in mind it is a choice.

The first step in your treatment project has got to be an accurate diagnosis. A detailed exam and some tests will help us map out the best “project” for you.

Developing a Better Self-Care Plan

If you’re reading this, you likely already understand that so much of getting better when faced with a serious health issue and especially neuropathy and chronic pain is a do-it-for yourself project. And you likely realize a better self care plan can be a BIG piece of the puzzle.

It is also unrealistic for any doctor to say or any patient to assume that his or her own self-care does not have a major impact on their health, and yes of course recovery from any illness.

Because so many people find the topic so overwhelming, what I suggest is that you start by making very simple list. This is step one of your better self care plan.

For example, do you have the more common known risk factors that can cause or aggravate your health problems? This includes things like cigarette smoking, being as little as 10 to 20 pounds overweight, being inactive or sedentary, and consuming too much alcohol?

Do you now have to take more medications because your diet has been so poor?

You see all of these things can aggravate most health issues especially when neuropathy and chronic pain become part of them.

Perhaps there are genetic or family issues, which you cannot change completely.

But could you do a better job of taking care of yourself?

Could you walk more, stretch every day at least once, take your advised supplements and follow a plant based diet plan, and watch the timing and composition of your meals?

Are you using the NDGen® or wearable laser treatment devices you bought from us?

Could you do a better job of working on your stress, your high blood pressure and migraines?

Are you regularly exercising, and taking “time-outs” every day for meditation or prayer?

You see where I am going. One of the most important things you can do right now is to make a better self care plan list for yourself. Share this only with yourself and your health care professionals.

And then, choose just one thing to work on today!

Rather than becoming overwhelmed, it is much more productive to focus on one change at a time. Once that change has been activated, move onto the next. And so on, one day at a time.

When you start behaving in this way, you’ll likely find a better self care plan can improve results, and provide greater success when  working with our treatment professionals!

How Footwear Affects Neuropathy

The shape of your feet changes with age, swelling, as well as peripheral neuropathy.

One of the issues we see very frequently in the neuropathy patient is whether their footwear fits comfortably.

It is very easy to take for granted the role that proper footwear has on your level of comfort. That is of course unless you suffer from peripheral neuropathy.

There are all a whole host of other conditions that occur with neuropathy that can slow down or complicate recovery. This includes common things such as flatfoot or having conditions like plantar fasciitis.

There are however some very simple things you can do. Number one, visit a traditional foot and shoe store and have your feet properly measured.

The reason for this is the shape of your feet changes with age, swelling, as well as peripheral neuropathy. Muscle changes, which accompany neuropathy, are responsible for this.

The neuropathy patient should take advantage of the expertise of their clinician too. Ask questions about the most appropriate footwear for you. Learn some basics about proper shoe construction such as the shape of the last and the strength of the heel counter.

Sometimes, “diabetic” shoes better holds inserts, which your clinician may prescribe. These may also allow for better circulation and less neuropathy pain.

We find that many neuropathy patients have excellent relief by wearing running shoes most of the time. The reason for this is the combination of shock absorption and breathability is helpful for many patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy.

This is one area where consulting the properly trained neuropathy treatment specialist can be of huge benefit!
