What Causes Neuropathy?

Are you recently diagnosed and wondering what causes neuropathy? If so, you are not alone. According to multiple sources, over 20 million people in the United states suffer with neuropathy. An estimated 60-70% of all diabetics eventually suffer with some neuropathy. Since diabetes is one of the most prevalent disease processes affecting 29 million plus Americans, neuropathy pain will continue being a major problem.

Diabetes is a big contributor to the neuropathy population, but it’s not alone. For instance, chemotherapy and toxin induced neuropathy. But, there are many others. Here are just a few of the other possible causes of neuropathy pain:

  • autoimmune disorders
  • vascular problems (poor blood flow)
  • some infections and viruses
  • nerve pressure from swollen tissues secondary to hormonal imbalances, tumors, etc.
  • physical injury
  • diabetes
  • chemotherapy
  • toxins
  • and more

How to Treat the Multiple Causes of Neuropathy

As you can see, it’s not a simple question about what causes neuropathy. Though, there are many causes, the symptoms and treatments are similar, but not exactly the same. Our NeuropathyDR treatment centers treat each patient as the individual they are.

In order to assure patients are treated in the best possible way, each patient is evaluated on a case by case basis. Then, we act from all angles to minimize and control the neuropathy and its associated pain. Those treatments consist of options including neurostimulation, dietary changes, nutritional support, laser therapy, massage, physical therapy and more. Our highly trained team of providers put together just the right treatment plan for you.

We care for you, not just your neuropathy. It’s our mission to help our patients live a happier, healthier, fuller life. Our teams use a holistic approach to caring for the whole you.

Beyond Conventional Neuropathy Treatment

Ask yourself if “conventional” neuropathy treatment alone is making you better?

First (you probably already know this), medicines alone have been the primary or conventional neuropathy treatment. There are a lot of medications used to treat neuropathy and nerve pain. Treatments are essentially the same no matter the cause. Most current drug treatments are directed at altering nerve, brain, and pain receptors.

Do you still wonder, “Okay, so again, am I going to feel better?” Great question!

Can Conventional Neuropathy Treatment Cure Me?

Unfortunately, there is no known “cure” for many forms of neuropathy and nerve pain. However, there is much more beyond a medication only approach.

The biggest problem is, not enough patients and doctors are aware of new and often effective available treatments. This is one area our research is beginning to change.

Here’s a post about a holistic approach and moving beyond conventional neuropathy treatment, if you’d like to know more.

To provide the best care for our neuropathy and nerve pain patients, we usually have to embrace other options. Here are a few reasons why it’s so important to use the multiple modality approach.

  • Better pain relief
  • Less medications are often needed
  • Less side effects
  • Improved quality of life

These four reasons alone are enough, but there are others.

Here at NeuropathyDR that is part of our mission. We inform patients and doctors of evolving treatment options. Knowledgeable experts more and more use a variety of treatments to help neuropathy and nerve pain patients feel better, and lead a better life.

The key takeaway we’d like to share is, the choice is yours.

What can you do? Inform yourself, do your research, and know your options.

What is Holistic Neuropathy Treatment?

Blending holistic & conventional neuropathy treatment can so often help relieve your pain. This is what we do at NeuropathyDR. Helping patients be successful with neuropathy and pain relief is our passion. We love to see our patients improve in ways they’ve never done before. We find blending a conventional & holistic approach is so often the best way to make this happen.

But, you might wonder what exactly what we mean by holistic neuropathy treatment. Well here goes!

What is a Holistic Neuropathy Treatment Plan?

We believe that treatment plans should be as individualized as the people they effect. As many kinds of people as there are, so too are there as many ways of treating them. For instance, think about these different methods of treatment, then think of how many you’ve been told about:

  • Prescription medications (pills) – medicine
  • Intravenous therapy (IVs) – medicine
  • Neurostimulation (NDGen®)
  • Nutrition – food & targeted supplements
  • Hydration – fluids
  • Exercise – body movement
  • Laser therapy
  • Physical therapy

And the list could go on and on. Most likely you’ve heard of a couple, but it’s highly unlikely any practitioner has helped you put together your own individualized plan of action using whichever ones work best for you. The point is, there are many options out there and that’s the message we are here to spread. Every patient is an individual and no one treatment plan works for every single one of them all the time.

We believe the best approach is blending the best of conventional & holistic neuropathy treatment because we know that’s where the most success can be achieved.

Through many years of practice, we have learned some of the best combinations for patients, including many of those listed above. The absolute best way to treat your neuropathy pain and/or other chronic pain is a combination therapy.

We advise you to work with a trained physician who understands the benefits and outcomes of both conventional & holistic treatment choices.

Here at NeuropathyDR, that’s what we are all about. In fact, we want to help you. Helping patients find true success is our mission.

We’re waiting to hear from you now. Just give us a holler and we’ll help you get started. You can go ahead and join us over on Facebook right now. Just click HERE!

Multiple Underlying Causes

Perhaps the most frustrating, but real issue surrounding patients who suffer from peripheral neuropathy and many types of chronic pain is that more often than not, there are often multiple underlying causes.

As you know, life is an accumulation of experiences—sometimes, unfortunately, including trauma and illnesses.

All of these things have consequences, some of which will not show up for many years. You probably also know that things that are very easy to ignore at 25 now become impossible to ignore at 65 and beyond.

One of the issues that concerns me while treating many neuropathy patients is when clinicians and patients focus exclusively on trying to find the “one” cause of their pain, burning, tingling numbness or other neuropathy symptoms.

The reason for this is quite simple. Most commonly, patients develop peripheral neuropathy as the result of multiple underlying causes.

For example, a common scenario is an overweight smoker who had a history of back surgery. Perhaps they are overweight or pre-diabetic, or have used some medications (commonly statins) known to cause neuropathy. These are some of the many multiple underlying causes we find in patient histories every day.

The reality is, all these things are risk factors for the development of chronic pain, and often peripheral neuropathy.

So, unless all these multiple underlying causes are addressed, the patient is unlikely to significantly improve.

Worse yet is when doctors and other caregivers are not familiar with this all-too-common scenario.

We honestly believe this is the reason why so many patients receive symptomatic prescriptions, yet no constructive advice on how to manage, let alone possibly beat, their peripheral neuropathy.

So the best advice we can give you is to try and understand everything that may be contributing to your current situation.

Also understand how very important it is NOT to delay proper treatment. The longer the delay, the more difficult peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain becomes to manage.

We find this is also why the biggest neuropathy treatment successes come when implementation of EARLY effective pain & neuropathy treatment, including neurostimulation (NDGen(R)), manual and massage therapy, laser (LLLT/LED) therapy, can have a profound impact on our patients’ outcomes, no matter what the multiple underlying cause(s) might turn out to be.

What About Laser Treatments?

Laser has been around since about 1960 or so when a now famous scientist produced these “focused light beams” in the laboratory. Laser treatments in some forms have actually been used in medicine for many years.

Now, lasers are everywhere, everything from CD Players, printers and measuring devices to military weapons. I’m sure you may even have seen a few of your own! These ultra focused light beams can be used at high intensity to seal tissue, aid surgeons dentists and dermatologists in their daily work with patients. And at lower intensity, they have had applications in pain and neuropathy treatment for some time too.

So what does laser have to do with neuropathy and pain treatment? Well, it could be that laser treatments are the “missing link” in some forms of neuropathy and pain treatment! One of our basic attempts in neuropathy and pain treatment is to do whatever can help safely and effectively boost our cells use of “energy”. Well, along with proper nutrition and electrotherapy, laser may aid energy production in damaged nerves. The way this may happen is fascinating, but way beyond the scope of this column.

No treatment works 100 percent of the time. And that is a key point to remember. Nowhere is this more apparent than in laser treatments for neuropathy. Even amongst laser treatment experts there’s often disagreement as to what makes good neuropathy and pain treatment. But some techniques and equipment are proving very effective while others are a complete waste! And this is exactly why we now have so many types of laser treatments available.

This even includes an home laser treatments you can actually sleep with to improve your laser treatment results for pain and perhaps wound healing as well.

The good news is more experience and research including our own is helping us find even better laser treatments than we have available today!

Always remember though, our team members go to great lengths every day to be sure we are up to date in the latest, and best forms of laser treatment for you and your family!

Your Treatment Project

What frustrates physicians and patients alike in peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain syndromes is that multiple issues are happening simultaneously. So often it requires considerable work by both patient and doctor to sort out each component properly. In essence, this becomes your treatment project.

The Hard Truth About Dairy

You Won’t Hear This Advice From Many Doctors, But This One Factor May Change the Effectiveness of Your Neuropathy Diet.

The consumption of dairy products has always been a highly charged topic in nutrition. Here is the hard truth about dairy.

On the one hand, there is a sizable lobby advocating for the U.S. dairy industry. On the other hand, there is overwhelming scientific evidence that regular consumption of dairy products is a pretty bad idea for human beings.

In short, if you are wrestling with whether to include milk and other dairy products in your neuropathy diet, any contemplation of this question leads to a straightforward conclusion.

More than half of the human population has trouble digesting milk, leading to digestion problems, allergic reactions, and eventually elevated levels of “bad fats” in your body. What’s worse, there is a hormonal growth factor contained in most dairy products that is known to instigate several different types of cancer, including prostate and breast cancer. One specific kind of milk sugar called galactose is linked to ovarian cancer.

And the regular consumption of dairy is additionally linked to the likelihood of developing type 1 diabetes, which is a major risk factor for neuropathic pain.

All of this means that a neuropathy diet that eliminates dairy (as well as gluten) is one of the most effective ways to reduce inflammation and pain associated with neuropathy and chronic pain.

It’s best to make a gradual shift in your diet so that the changes you instill can be permanent. There are many dairy alternatives out there, including products made from coconut, rice, and almonds. Just watch out for any added sugar or thickening agents like carrageenan.

As always, I urge you to become your own best health advocate. HERE is a copy of our NeuropathyDR Diet Plan!

Looking for a Home Treatment for Chronic Neuropathic Pain? Reasons to Give Meditation a Try

Could Meditation be an Effective Home Treatment for Chronic Neuropathic Pain?

Meditation is a free wellness tool that you can use anytime and anywhere. And it’s not as complicated as you might think.

It might surprise you to hear that meditation can be an effective home treatment for chronic neuropathic pain. Maybe it doesn’t seem like something that would be an accepted neuropathy treatment, like medications or other traditional approaches to chronic pain.

In fact, there is a type of meditation that is actually considered to be evidence-based. In other words, multiple studies have looked at this method and seen positive results for chronic pain. A program called Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction has been used in many renowned hospitals and medical centers, incorporating a type of mindfulness meditation that focuses on noticing thoughts and sensations without judgment.

There are books and tapes available about this program, but you don’t even need that kind of specialized training to begin using meditation for wellness on your own. All you need is to understand why mindfulness meditation works with chronic pain.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, who developed this evidence-based program, says that when we have chronic pain, there are two things that make us suffer: the physical pain itself, and our thoughts and emotions about the pain that intensify what we are feeling. Our story about the awfulness or unbearableness of the pain builds a layer of tension around it, like wearing a shirt with a collar that’s too tight.

Meditation lets us change the way we feel ABOUT the pain, so that we can be more relaxed and accepting of it. That way, we can experience peacefulness even when physical pain is present.

Those are the reasons why meditation can be an effective home treatment for chronic neuropathic pain. Soon, we’ll discuss some different ways to meditate and how you can find the method that works best for you.
